What is Knowledge Cutoff?

May 29, 2025

When you're working with AI, you've got to know that AI model's knowledge cutoff.

Knowledge cutoff is the last date an AI model was trained. Think of it as the model's "graduation day". The model is not trained on any new information after that.

Everything the AI knows, from who is the President of Singapore to the latest version of Tailwind CSS, is based on data available to it up to that date.

Beyond the cutoff date, the AI model doesn't have information on events or developments. It's like reading a history textbook that was published on a specific date, obviously anything past that date is isn't covered in it.

But don't worry, some AI models have access to tools like real-time web search. Such tools allow the AI to fetch up-to-date information.
